AREA HISTORY
Summerhouse Beach & Racquet Club, located on the southernmost part of Crescent Beach, is within a short walk of Fort Matanzas National Park. The current location of Fort Matanzas enjoys a commanding view of the Matanzas Inlet and the Matanzas River which were called the "backdoor to St. Augustine". As early as 1569 the Spanish built a watchtower surrounded by a stockade near the present fort location. This watchtower was manned day and night and if enemy ships approached the city from the south, word would be sent back to St. Augustine to prepare for the city's defense. Pirates as well as the British did indeed try to capture and plunder the city by sailing up the river and were repulsed each time. Finally, in 1742 the Spanish built the current fort which was constructed of coquina rock. Fortified with five cannon and a handful of soldiers, the small but well-positioned fort discouraged the British and pirates from ever attacking St. Augustine again.
